Nassim Nicholas Taleb: the prophet of boom and doom

I like what this guy has to say.  I agree the world is too complex now, especially economics.

Aquarius Horoscope for week of January 17, 2008
Verticle Oracle card Aquarius (January 20-February 19)
While riding my bicycle through a quiet neighborhood this afternoon, I saw two girls fiddling with the gate of a tall wooden fence. They were frustrated because it wouldn't open and let them inside. One kicked the gate. The other tried unsuccessfully to climb up to reach down over the top to the latch on the other side. Finally, the younger girl put her hand under the gate and managed to free some obstruction on the other side. The gate opened. "I got it! I got it!" she yelled, jumping up and down with exhilarated triumph. I foresee those words and that emotion flying out of you soon when you, too, finally open a metaphorical door that has been stuck.

So, Vi is getting really close to having this baby. Yesterday we were down in the Italian open air market when she started getting strong contractions. So we rush home, call the midwife and go in to see her. She says that Vi is 1 cm, and not quite ready, she's in early labor, which can go on for days or hours, no telling. Her contractions were about 8 minutes apart then. We got sent home, to wait more. We're suppose to call and go in when they are 5 minutes apart.

We still don't have anyone to watch Mordecai while we are in labor. I don't know exactly what we are going to do. I just may have to watch him instead of helping Vi. I don't know what else to do. We still don't know anyone up here in Philly. Hopefully everything will work out.

I'll try to keep everyone updated.

Ok, we are officially living in Philly now. Well, close enough to Philly. We're in Jeffersonville which is in Norristown or also known as West Norriton, or Eagleville. I really can't figure out what this area is called.

Now we just need to learn this city.

Well, it looks like we can't find anyone to take the dog or the cat so we'll be taking them with us. I'm not sure how we are going to manage with them up in Connecticut but we'll try our best. We leave Austin on the 25th. Only a few more days left. Still a lot of packing to get done and the moving sale is on Saturday, hopefully will get rid of most of the stuff that we aren't taking. I feel nervous and excited. I have no idea of what to expect with this move. We still haven't found a place to live and now we need to find one that allows dogs, that will limit our choices. I just hope everything works out.

Just wanted to post a Happy Anniversary to my wife. Happy 3 years. I love you more and more everyday.
23 March 2007 @ 09:46 pm
Well, in case you haven't already heard. Vi and I are expecting our 2 child. According to the ultrasound we are due November 1st.

I have a lot of thoughts on this but I don't even know where to begin to describe them all. Life has been so busy lately, that this pregnancy hasn't fully hit me yet. I still haven't told all of my family yet. I'm just not moved to tell them. I'm not sure why. I must think more on this later, when I have more time.

Either way, this is a good thing. Must sleep now. work again in the morning.
So yesterday at work I had an interesting challenge to do. I had to get 3 Dell plasmas to play the same HD dvd and be able to switch from the DVD to a computer at the push of button. Now normally this isn't much of a challege with the equipment that we have, however the fact that this was to be done high definition is what made it an interesting challege as I haven't tried to do that before. High definition complicates matters because of the types of connections/signals you can use.

At first I thought about connecting the plasmas to a VGA D/A box to a Folsom Press Pro which only has VGA connectors on it. The Press Pro would then be connected to the computer and to the HD DVD players with a five wire breakout cable. Well that didn't work right, all I got was a green image. So for some reason the Press Pro was reading the signals as RGB instead of component. The HD Dvd player was sending out an component signals and press pro was reading it as rgb, so I would only get green. weird.

So since that didn't work, it was decided that we try using an Image Pro with a RGB d/a. The image pro allows both rgb and vga inputs. So the computer can hook via VGA and the DVD player should work with component. Well, that didn't work but it did work sorta. The image pro read the signal as 1080i but it wouldn't show the image at 1080i. It didn't make sense. It should work. The DVD player hooked up directly to the plasma worked, so we knew the plasma could get the signal. We changed the output settings on the image pro but nothing seemed to work except when we changed the output settings to 480i NTSC standard. And it still read the input settings at 1080i. So after playing with all the settings for long while and changing out cables etc... much trouble shooting later...We tried it going out of the image pro with a VGA cable. And lo and behold it worked but not at 1080i but at 1024x768.

It seems that the native resolution of that Dell plasma was 1024x768. So the image pro could send out that signal to the plasma only via VGA cable not component. What I don't understand is why the plasma just didn't convert the 1080i signal into it's native resolution like plasma normally does. Normally a plasma will upgrade or downgrade that video signals it gets into it's native resolution so that the viewer can see the picture. So it receives a 1080i or 720p signals and then it's downgrades the signal into 1024x768. But when the signal came from the image pro, the plasma would convert the signal. But when we sent the signal via the VGA cable with the output being 1024x768, it worked. The 1024x768 wouldn't transmit via the component cable. So the whole problems seems to be with the Plasmas, but i'm still unsure of why.

Overall we got it working as best as those plasmas can do. It's not HD which is what the client wanted but it's close and most likely that wouldn't see the difference.

I thought I figured it out but the more I think the more I'm not sure I understand why it work out the way it did. As frustrating as this all was, I throughly enjoyed the challenge.
